Nick Romney. Cloud engineering consultant, infrastructure generalist, and documentation-first platform builder.

Website · Writing · Certifications · Non-AI thesis proofreader · LinkedIn · Credly

I build cloud platforms that teams can run with confidence.

I'm Nick, a hands-on cloud and infrastructure engineer with 25 years spent keeping systems running, bringing Dev and Ops together, and replacing fragile manual processes with repeatable, documented workflows. Occasionally: internet plumber.

My work spans banking modernisation, internal developer platforms, and disaster recovery. Security, automation, and documentation are part of the build from the start.

What that looks like

  • Modernising banking infrastructure: private AKS, cloud networking, and Terraform for regulated platforms with strict security controls.
  • Helping 40+ teams ship: self-service infrastructure, reusable GitHub Actions, secure runners, and onboarding people can follow.
  • Planning for failure: AWS resilience, identity, backups, and ransomware-aware disaster recovery.
  • Making the knowledge useful: scripts, diagrams, runbooks, and a practical Terraform AKS baseline clusters course.

The toolkit: Azure, AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, Pulumi, Linux, and Bash.

Things I build and share

Small tools for real jobs, alongside experiments in how platforms should work.

Project What it's for
certconv Inspect and convert certificates, with an optional terminal UI
website-testing Smoke-test websites with Bash helpers and an evolving Go CLI
platform Explore local Kubernetes and repeatable lab environments with kind and Lima
visualsubnetcalc Plan subnets visually and collaborate on address layouts
frankenphp-moodle Run Moodle on FrankenPHP and MariaDB with repeatable verification
laemp Provision Debian and Ubuntu hosts, with optional Moodle deployment

I also built a thesis style checker after helping a friend with a PhD thesis. It uses local JavaScript to flag common writing errors.

I write about cloud, security, AI-assisted development, and web tooling at nickromney.com.

Elsewhere

Sites I own or run: Avuncular · By Lunchtime · CI/CD Pipelines · Online Safety Alliance.

Certifications include CISSP, CKA, CKAD, CKS, and Terraform Associate, alongside AWS, Azure, and Oracle Cloud credentials. Full list and study notes →

The job isn't finished when it works once. It's finished when the boring parts are automated and the next person knows how to run it.
