What's the purpose of this PR

Add an OpenTelemetry metrics exporter for Apollo Client Monitor so applications can report Apollo client metrics through their configured OpenTelemetry SDK.

The plugin uses the OpenTelemetry API at runtime and is selected with apollo.client.monitor.external.type=opentelemetry.

Which issue(s) this PR fixes:

No linked issue.

Brief changelog

  • Add an OpenTelemetry plugin that records Apollo counter and gauge metrics with their tags as attributes.

Testing

  • mvn clean test — failed in apollo-core on Java 21: three existing logger tests throw ClassCastException when casting AppClassLoader to URLClassLoader. Later modules did not run.
  • mvn -B -f apollo-plugin/apollo-plugin-client-opentelemetry/pom.xml test -Dmaven.gitcommitid.skip=true — could not resolve apollo-client:2.6.0-SNAPSHOT, so the plugin tests have not been verified locally.

Follow this checklist to help us incorporate your contribution quickly and easily:

  • Read the Contributing Guide before making this pull request.
  • Write a pull request description that is detailed enough to understand what the pull request does, how, and why.
  • Format your code with mvn -B spotless:apply -Dmaven.gitcommitid.skip=true and mvn -B -f apollo-compat-tests/pom.xml spotless:apply -Dmaven.gitcommitid.skip=true.
  • Write necessary unit tests to verify the code.
  • Run mvn clean test to make sure this pull request doesn't break anything.
  • Update the CHANGES log.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added support for exporting Apollo client metrics to OpenTelemetry, including counters and gauges with metric attributes. Enable it through the new OpenTelemetry metrics plugin.
  • Documentation
    • Updated the Apollo Java 2.6.0 release notes to include OpenTelemetry metrics export.

📝 Walkthrough

The change adds an Apollo client metrics exporter that records counters and gauges through OpenTelemetry. It registers the exporter as a service provider, adds a Maven module, and includes unit and integration tests for metric recording and exporter status.

Changes: Apollo client metrics export

Layer / File(s) Summary
Add and register the exporter
apollo-plugin/apollo-plugin-client-opentelemetry/..., apollo-plugin/pom.xml, CHANGES.md
Adds a Maven module and service-provider entry for the OpenTelemetry exporter. The exporter obtains the global apollo-client meter, records counters and gauges with tag attributes, and reports its initialization and instrument counts.
Verify exporter behavior
apollo-plugin/apollo-plugin-client-opentelemetry/src/test/...
Adds mocked tests for exporter support, initialization, registration, and response status. Integration tests check gauge updates, separate tagged series, and accumulated counter values.

Applications that start Apollo monitoring before registering OpenTelemetry may lose client metrics and fail to register their SDK. Resolve the initialization order before merging; tighten the pre-initialization tests as well.

🌐 Web query:

OpenTelemetry Java 1.62.0 GlobalOpenTelemetry.java get set deferred no-op registration semantics

💡 Result:

For **OpenTelemetry Java 1.62.0**, the key distinction is whether a lookup merely returns a no-op or **registers** it globally:

- **`getOrNoop()`** returns the registered instance, or a no-op if none is registered. It **does not register** that no-op, so a later `set(realInstance)` can still succeed. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java/v1.62.0/api/all/src/main/java/io/opentelemetry/api/GlobalOpenTelemetry.java))
- **`get()`** returns the registered instance if present. Otherwise, it first attempts global autoconfiguration; if that does not provide an instance, it calls `set(OpenTelemetry.noop())`. That no-op is then registered, so a later `set(realInstance)` throws `IllegalStateException`. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java/v1.62.0/api/all/src/main/java/io/opentelemetry/api/GlobalOpenTelemetry.java))
- **`set(instance)`** registers once; another call fails. Set your instance early, before any `get()` call that might register the no-op. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java/v1.62.0/api/all/src/main/java/io/opentelemetry/api/GlobalOpenTelemetry.java))
- **`isSet()`** checks registration without causing it. Use it before `get()` if you need to distinguish an installed global from an unset one. ([raw.githubusercontent.com](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/open-telemetry/opentelemetry-java/v1.62.0/api/all/src/main/java/io/opentelemetry/api/GlobalOpenTelemetry.java))

In short: **`getOrNoop()` is non-committing; `get()` can commit the global to a no-op.**

Do not call GlobalOpenTelemetry.get() before the application registers its SDK.

Apollo can initialize this exporter during normal monitor startup before the application registers OpenTelemetry. In OpenTelemetry 1.62.0, GlobalOpenTelemetry.get() attempts autoconfiguration and registers OpenTelemetry.noop() when no instance is available. The exporter then retains a no-op meter, and a later GlobalOpenTelemetry.set(...) fails because the global has already been set.

Require SDK registration before exporter initialization, or inject an explicitly supplied OpenTelemetry instance instead of obtaining the global instance here.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fail the test when registration throws.

If registerOrUpdateCounterSample() throws, this catch block makes the test pass despite its stated no-throw expectation. The gauge, empty-tag, and null-tag tests repeat the same pattern. Remove these catch blocks so an unexpected exception fails the test.
