🎯 Changes

Fixes #553.

Four transform hooks had no filter, so Vite called them on every module. inject-plugin parsed each one with oxc until it found the devtools setup file, Vite's pre-bundled dependency chunks included. Each hook now declares a filter built from its handler's own checks:

Hook Filter
inject-source adds: skip .ts, .mts and .cts ids, and code without <
remove-devtools-on-build id not in node_modules and not ?raw; code mentions a package in TANSTACK_DEVTOOLS_PACKAGES
console-pipe-transform adds: code has one of the root entry markers the handler looks for
inject-plugin id not in node_modules; code mentions a package in TANSTACK_DEVTOOLS_PACKAGES
connection-injection id has @tanstack/devtools or @tanstack/event-bus; code has a placeholder
runtime-bridge the ids and code isEventClientModule accepts, with no ?

better-console-logs already had a filter. The handlers keep their checks, so Vite before 6.3, which ignores filter, behaves as before.

Two filters skip modules the old code handled:

  • inject-source skips .ts, .mts and .cts files, which cannot contain JSX, and files without a <, which cannot hold a JSX element. JSX in .js and .mdx files and in Vue lang.tsx blocks is still annotated. I chose this over a .jsx/.tsx include, which would drop JSX written in .js files. (The Rspack loader already limits source injection to .jsx and .tsx.)
  • inject-plugin no longer looks in node_modules, as Rspack's main loader rule already does. The devtools setup file is never an installed package. Before, a package that imports a devtools package and loads first would have been picked, and plugins added from the UI would have been written into it.

The other filters match their handlers exactly. (console-pipe-transform also lets through code with solid-js/web but no render(, and the handler rejects it.)

Two open PRs touch the same hooks. #538 adds /.vite/deps ids to connection-injection's check, so whichever lands second must add /\/\.vite\/deps/ to that hook's id filter. #548 adds order: 'pre' next to the inject-source filter. I can rebase on either.

Measurements

Time spent in the plugin's transform handlers during a cold dev server's first page load, median of 10 runs on an Apple M6 with Node 24.21:

App Modules main This PR
examples/react/basic 88 client 56 ms 10 ms
examples/react/start 321 client, SSR and Nitro 54 ms 14 ms
shadcn-admin with devtools() and <TanStackDevtools /> 176 client 93 ms 18 ms

A script started each app's own vite.config.ts, loaded the page in headless Chromium and timed every @tanstack/devtools:* handler, switching between the two builds after each run. In each app, both builds changed the same modules in every hook, and inject-plugin found the same setup file.

Most of the saving is inject-plugin. In shadcn-admin it parsed the pre-bundled chunks before it reached src/routes/__root.tsx, the 27th module; the 802 KB react-dom client chunk alone took 48 ms. Page load times overlap between runs (Start: 371 to 620 ms on main, 365 to 509 ms with this PR), so these apps are too small to show a load time gain. The saving is per module, so it grows with the module count.

The gist from #553 with this build: app modules 150 ms → 72 ms, dependency modules 54 ms → 0.1 ms. The changed counts are the same, except that inject-plugin no longer picks a file in node_modules.

Testing

  • tests/transform-filters.test.ts, new: for each hook, sample modules its handler transforms pass the filter, and sample modules it ignores fail it; the handler (detectDevtoolsFile for inject-plugin) is called on each to confirm. The samples include JSX in .js, .mdx and Vue lang.tsx, < div>, and .ts, .mts, .cts and .d.ts files. One test checks that every transform hook has a filter. One starts a Vite dev server and checks which modules reach each handler.
  • tests/index.test.ts: the connection-injection tests call the hook's handler, now that the hook is an object.
  • The new tests fail against main's plugin, and the .js and .mdx cases fail with a .jsx/.tsx include.
  • Vite 8 builds of examples/react/basic: the production build still removes devtools from src/setup.tsx, and a --mode development build still injects data-tsd-source (62 attributes), so Rolldown accepts the filters.
  • pnpm test:pr: eslint, sherif, knip, tests, types, publint and build pass for the 13 affected projects.

📝 Walkthrough

The Vite plugin now declares transform filters for source injection, devtools removal, console piping, devtools-file discovery, connection replacement, and runtime-bridge injection. Tests cover filter matching and handler calls. Documentation describes the updated exclusions and devtools-file discovery behavior.

Explanation

The description is detailed and covers the change, motivation, testing, release impact, and linked issue. The checklist item confirming understanding of the code remains unchecked, but the description is otherwise complete and on topic.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

The implementation satisfies the coding requirements in [#553]. packages/devtools-vite/src/plugin.ts adds filters to the four previously unfiltered hooks. It also narrows inject-source and console-pipe-transform. The filters match the handlers' ID and code checks, including the documented .ts, .mts, .cts, and node_modules exclusions. tests/transform-filters.test.ts covers filter matching, handler behavior, and Vite dispatch. Existing transform tests were updated for object-form hooks.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within [#553]. Production changes add transform filters and preserve handler checks. The changeset and skill documentation describe the new behavior. The test changes validate the filters and adapt existing tests to the new hook shape. No unrelated product behavior or unrelated files are changed.

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 80.00% which is sufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff. Analyzed 5 functions across 3 files. (3 skipped: 3 unsupported.)

Exclude installed modules in the handler.

On Vite 6.0–6.2, transform filters are ignored. An installed module can therefore reach this handler. If it imports a supported devtools package, the handler can record that module as devtoolsFileId. Marketplace injection then targets the wrong file.

Apply the same checks inside the handler before calling detectDevtoolsFile.

🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Account for Vite versions that ignore hook filters.

If the test suite runs with Vite 6.0–6.2, these handler-call assertions fail: those versions call handlers without applying their filters. Keep the filtered-call assertions for Vite 6.3+, and check the handler fallback separately for older supported versions. (vite.dev)
